My MRI Arthrogram Feel

Posted by miss m on Wednesday, July 26, 2022 @ 10:57pm in Blog, Sickness and Health Issues | ∞

Yesterday, I had to have an MRI arthrogram on my left shoulder. It was a unique experience and I was really worried about it and I wasn't sure what to expect. I spent a lot of time trying to google and research MRI arthrogram too every bit what it was like and what it would feel like. Since I've at present been through information technology, I thought it might be helpful for some others to read my personal experience having a shoulder arthrogram and MRI.

First, a trivial background

(If you don't care most my specific history leading upward to the procedure, feel free to skip down!)

The damned thing has been problematic for the better part of a twelvemonth now. Last fall (2016), I woke upward one morn thinking I had slept incorrect on the arm, considering the shoulder hurt, and it ached down my arm to my elbow. It hurt to reach, extend and stretch it, plus it injure to lift weight with information technology. This problem went on and off for months, varying in intensity and aggravation until May of this yr (2017), I finally made an date with an orthopedic doctor to get it looked at.

Initial diagnosis was "rotator cuff tendonitis with shoulder impingement." Md gave me a cortisone shot in the shoulder (which HURT and made information technology anguish REALLY BAD for like 2-3 days after, but which ultimately eliminated the "burning" sensation of hurting I was experiencing in my upper arm downward to my elbow.)

script for physical therapy on my left shoulder

I went for iv weeks of physical therapy. Saw some progress, simply nevertheless had pain and weakness in certain motions. (Notably fully extending it outward and fully outward and to the right. ) Saw the ortho again after a month and he recommended giving it some more pt fourth dimension, then I did another 4 weeks for 8 weeks total.

At 8 weeks, we did see more improvement, simply felt like I had hitting a plateau and there was nonetheless pain and weakness. Ortho recommended I do an MRI, only non just a normal one, only an MRI Arthrogram.

What is an MRI Arthrogram?

So, "Arthrography is the x-ray examination of a joint space. During arthrography, a dissimilarity material is injected to enable the radiologist to study the joint infinite that appears on the x-ray image. Trunk sites often studied by the various types of arthrograms include the wrist, ankle, shoulder, and hip." (source)

And an "MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) is a test that uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to make pictures of organs and structures inside the trunk." (source)

Put it together and it's a two part procedure where you first go injected with a contrast (in my case, gadolinium) along with fluid directly into the joint (in my instance, my left shoulder) in social club to better visualize the joint during the MRI so that modest tears can exist more than easily seen by the radiologist.

The entire procedure was about 2 hours in total. I booked the engagement at a local outpatient imaging centre. I volition note, it was a most 3 one/2 week waiting period to get information technology done because not every identify that does MRI does arthrograms. They must accept a Doctor of radiology on manus to inject the contrast.

My hubby came with me as I was instructed I had to take a driver.

I arrived and checked in and got my lovely wrist id bracelet.

And so what does an Arthrogram feel similar?

The side by side stride was to get in and remove my shirt and bra and put on a gown so they could access my shoulder completely. They brought me into a room and had me lay downwardly on the table. The doc sterilized my shoulder and surrounding surface area. They use fluoroscopy which is a existent-time, moving image version of an 10-ray to properly position the needle.

The medico did an injection of a numbing anesthetic first. It pinched a piddling and there was a pocket-size, sharp bite of hurting but it quickly went away. Then he slowly filled the joint with the solution of the fluid and the contrast. During this time, I was laying on the bed and they were using the fluroscope to monitor in real time to ensure the fluid went exactly where it was supposed to go.

Later on the injection was consummate, they took a few yet x-ray shots also just in instance as a fill-in in the event the MRI images were not clear.

The arthrogram was uncomfortable but not terribly painful. My shoulder felt "full" and there was pressure in my joint from the fluid but the numbing agent helped.

What does an MRI feel like?

Afterward the arthrogram part was consummate, it was time for my MRI. At present, I planned ahead and fabricated sure I wore nothing with any metal. Because MRI involves very powerful magnets, you lot cannot take Any metal anywhere in the machine. (This means I also had to remove my glasses during the examination.)

I was allowed to change out of my gown back into my sports bra and tee. (I picked up a seamless ane similar this specifically for this procedure. It is VITAL that it not have whatever snaps, clasps, or hooks because all of that can contain metal!)

I also wore a pair of yoga capri pants making sure there were no zippers, buttons, snaps, or metal.) Information technology was much more comfortable to have some semblance of normal clothes during the MRI instead of just being in a gown, so I highly recommend you look for something like free from metal to wear.

MRI is a very loud, very lengthy process. I laid downwardly on the bed and the tech positioned my arm at my side and propped information technology up and positioned it in a plastic, curved slice. She and then ran straps across my shoulder/arm and waist expanse, strapping me down to help keep me still. I institute a google image of similar configuration (without the straps)

I was also given headphones with music playing and a clasp bulb in my other (right) hand to press in the event of an emergency.

She left the room, and I slid into the MRI machine. The surface of the motorcar is only inches from you. Information technology is claustrophobic – even for me who doesn't actually ordinarily suffer from claustrophobia. It's also EXTREMELY LOUD. I could barely hear the music (which was loud in the quiet room) over the automobile. It makes a wide variety of clunking noises in unlike patterns. I had to lay perfectly still for virtually 20 minutes. One test had to exist redone – another 2.5 minutes – because I judge I was breathing besides much. 😉

2d round was harder. I had to lay with my arm up over my head with my hand behind my caput. Then, she put this big foam piece over my breast and half my face! Then she strapped THAT down. Miserable. I had to lay however for ten minutes – all the while, my shoulder was ON Burn down.

Thankfully, she said we got the scan and I was free to get after that.

Postal service procedure recovery

After the arthrogram and MRI, I got to head domicile. My arm was sore and felt "full" from the fluid and contrast. I was as well tired from the stress and anxiety of the twenty-four hour period, so I took a nap when I got habitation.

When I woke up, my whole shoulder hurt really bad. The numbing anesthesia wore off and the pressure in my shoulder made it felt like the whole shoulder was being stretched also far from the within making it ache something terrible. Information technology was also swollen. I tried to accept a photo just information technology's kinda hard to come across in the picture. It was definitely puffier than the regular side.

shoulder was firm and bloated the evening subsequently arthrogram

I took ibuprofen and iced the shoulder. Information technology helped a picayune but really, it was just really uncomfortable. It hurt throughout the entire shoulder, both from the pressure also as from the positioning in the MRI. The front shoulder, the rear into the shoulder bract and even into my upper arm all only hurt. It was definitely pretty miserable.

(When I had my hysterectomy, they pump your abdomen total of gas. This is true of most intestinal surgeries. Information technology expands the area. They get *nigh* of the gas out, but some drifts – and it generally gets up into your shoulders. The pain in my shoulders the first few days afterwards surgery was near unbearable and injure worse even than the abdomen. The pressure after the arthrogram was like to that kind of trapped air/gas force per unit area pain, though thankfully not as bad. But similar if yous've experienced it.)

Thankfully, when I woke up today (the 24-hour interval after) the swelling has gone downward and the pressure has eased. It's still sore in the "over did it" sorta manner but not as bad as yesterday.

Tips & Tricks

Hither's some personal advice based on my experience to brand the process as easy as possible. THIS IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE. PLEASE REFER TO SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS By YOUR Physician.

  • If you have feet or claustrophobia, it's perfectly ok to ask for something to aid.
I got a 2 pill script for diazepam from my doc a few days before and I took one valium 30 minutes before the appointment. It really helped take the edge off. Made the process a lot easier. Many places will even give you lot something in that location if you lot go far and realize information technology's overwhelming. Don't be afraid to ask. In that location's no shame in having anxiety or having a fear or phobia and it volition make it a lot easier to deal with.
  • Dress comfortably and exist mindful of whatsoever metal in your habiliment.
By planning alee and wearing comfortable habiliment, including something similar a seamless sports bra under your shirt instead of underwire bra or a bra with metal clasp, you lot tin leave it on during your MRI. Look for yoga pants or leggings without buttons or metal clasps. It'due south always more comfy to be in habiliment vs a gown and psychologically feels better also.
  • Get someone to drive y'all to and from.
I had my married man drive me. This allowed me to take a valium. And information technology meant I had someone to continue me visitor while waiting. Information technology as well meant that I didn't have to try to bulldoze dwelling house with one arm sore and limited mobility after.
  • Potable plenty of water the day earlier and after to assistance flush the contrast from your system.
Your kidneys should filter out the dissimilarity in about 24 hours. Only being hydrated the twenty-four hour period before and drinking a lot of water after your procedure you lot tin help flush it through your organisation easier and quicker.
  • Have ibuprofen later and use ice pack for pain/swelling.
Ibuprofen and ice can both help with swelling and pain. Get a reusable ice pack you can have stored in the freezer for minor injury on paw. Information technology's very comforting and can really help distract from the hurting.
  • Rest. Limit activity that solar day and take information technology easy.
They recommended light activeness on my left side for 12 hours, with gradual resuming of activity over the next 24-48 hours. Take it easy. Don't look to leap 100% back in. You volition probably be sore and worn out. If possible, take the day off so you can relax. Go some sleep and give yourself some time to recoup.

I stressed out over the procedure for iii weeks. I was scared and I didn't know what to expect. Overall, it was uncomfortable and claustrophobic, and my shoulder injure a lot that evening from the pressure of the dissimilarity/fluid, Only….information technology wasn't unbearable. And with some rest and a fiddling Advil you should exist feeling meliorate in a day or 2.

(Then all you have to do is wait on your results!)

Hopefully, my experience has helped you understand the process a little and makes it a little easier on you lot.
