What Happened to Mary Berry on 'The Great British Baking Show'?

As another season of The Great British Baking Show graces Netflix, we find ourselves once more asking the question: What happened to Mary Berry?!?

The Great British Baking Show's first seven seasons featured hosts Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, along with judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry. Together, this quartet brought an air of comfort and familiarity to the tent, with Paul and Mary honing a good cop/bad cop vibe. (Note: Paul was definitely the "bad cop.") However now that core team is gone. Long-time buds Sue and Mel have been replaced by giddy goth Noel Fielding and Q.I. host Sandi Toksvig. Paul Hollywood still lurks around the tent, but his new co-judge is the much sharper Prue Leith. The good news is The Great British Baking Show is still good. The bad news is we're worried about Mary Berry.

Where did Mary Berry go? Is she okay? Why did Mary Berry leave The Great British Baking Show? And can you still watch Mary Berry elsewhere?

Why Did Mary Berry Leave The Great British Baking Show?

Oh, yes, the great mystery of our time: why would the lovely Mary Berry leave The Great British Baking Show? Was she fired? HOW COULD SHE BE FIRED!?!? The answer is less sinister than you may think.

The Great British Baking Show was originally brought to the BBC by a company called Love Productions. The initial deal was that the BBC had the option to air the first seven seasons of the show. After that, the contracts would be up for re-negotiation. By the time the seventh season had aired on the BBC (and stateside on PBS), the show had become a massive international hit. Because of this, Love Productions decided to give the rights to the show to the next highest bidder, which wound up being Channel 4 (and eventually Netflix won the U.S. rights).

Here's the tricky thing. The BBC is Great Britain's national television channel. There's not only a prestige to it, but oftentimes talent may have multiple shows in production with the channel. When Love Productions made their decision to move to Channel 4, only Paul Hollywood would agree to leave the BBC. Perkins and Giedroyc decided to stay with the BBC, and Mary Berry inked some deals with the BBC for her own cooking programming.

Is Mary Berry Okay?

Wait. What? How could you ask such a thing? Then again, she is an extraordinarily petite 84-year-old woman who seemed to simply vanish from one of the most popular baking shows in the world. Perhaps you were concerned about her health.

I'm pleased to confirm that Mary Berry is alive and very well. She does indeed have a weaker, thinner left arm and twisted spine due to a horrific bout of polio she contracted as a child — but she is fine. Just yesterday it was revealed that Mary Berry had joined forces with the Duchess of Cambridge, aka Kate Middleton, to design a charity garden. See? She's doing well!

Where Did Mary Berry Go?

The good news is Mary Berry has been keeping busy since leaving The Great British Baking Show. Even before she left that show, she's been appearing in and hosting a number of lifestyle shows, such as Mary Berry's Absolute Favorites and Mary Berry's Country House Secrets (both of which are available on BritBox). There's also another BBC cooking competition show she appeared in after The Great British Baking Show called Britain's Best Home Cook, which is available on Hulu.

An all-new episode of The Great British Baking Show premieres on Netflix this Friday.
